Saverne, the gate of Alsace
The romans already took the « Col de Saverne » as a strategic section as shown by a lot of relics and traces. This important main road was a link between North (Lorraine) and South (Alsace) during the Middle-Ages.
Its name « gate of Alsace » is still topical : crossed by the secondary road 4 Strasbourg-Paris and highway 4, TGV station Paris-Strasbourg (500m from the hotel) and located on the regional and international lines, channel of the « Marne au Rhin ».
Located between the edge of the « Parc Naturel des Vosges du Nord », its forests and the varied « Plaine d'Alsace », Saverne is a privileged place for nature and escapade lovers (on foot, on horseback, by boat, by bicycle) : paths perfectly marked out by the « Club Vosgien », bucolic cycle tracks, marina offering nice cruises on the channel.
Historic places travel down the ages : castles (Rohan, Haut-Barr, Greifenstein...) – religious buildings (abbey in Marmoutier, churches in Saverne, Neuwiller les Saverne...) – museums in Saverne, Bouxwiller, Pfaffenhoffen...
discover the past of arts, traditions, folklore, legends, innovations through the ages (Tour Chappe or shiplift in Arzwiller for example) without forgetting the arts and crafts (crystal glassworks, pottery...).
Alsace is also famous for : village feasts, concerts, shows, activities at the « Château des Rohan » and elsewhere, organ concerts and of course the « Royal Palace » in Kirrwiller a 10-minute-drive away.
Concerning the culinary aspect, you will find at Chez Jean a wide range of gastronomic specialities from Alsace and elsewhere to continue by the alsatian wine road starting 15 kms away from Saverne.
